Bearing Vibration

Measuring vibration is an effective method of ascertaining how well a bearing is manufactured. High-frequency vibration levels, often called spike energy, detect minute microscopic flaws in rolling element bearings. The results below show a typical wheel bearing after 4000km of use. Lower values indicate a superior life and reduced losses from friction losses.

Genuine Bearings, Counterfeits and B Grade

This is a 100% Genuine NTN Bearing. It has been sourced directly from NTN Europe in Annecy, France. It is not B graded, counterfeit or an NTN labelled product from a third party. You can read more about this in the article Counterfeit NTN and SKF Bearings

There have been widespread reports of counterfeit and substandard (B Grade) bearings being sold to unsuspecting customers in the media. Using these items often results in diminished performance, reduced life and sometimes injury to personnel.

Genuine NTN vs Other NTN

The pictures below show two NTN Bearings, the bearing on the left is from Hambini via NTN in France, and the one on the right was purchased from a well-known UK bicycle bearing distributor; they claimed to have sourced their bearings from NTN. From the outside, they both look to be identical, and the packaging that they came in appeared to be identical. Further inspection of the bearings revealed largely similar seals that would be indiscernible to the average consumer. However, upon disassembly, several discrepancies were noted; the most obvious was the 40% higher ball count on the Hambini supplied bearing. Additionally, the Hambini supplied NTN bearing had a riveted metal cage, the distributor's bearing was folded sheet metal. Folded metal cages have considerably poorer load and stiffness ratings. The distributor bearing had failed after only 600km, a root cause investigation was conducted, and the bearings were found to be of dubious quality with an unverifiable supply chain.

    I don’t have creaking issues, thank God, but the stock FSA bearings that came with my Roubaix SL4 were showing signs of being worn out after 3,500 miles. I decided to spring for these after getting schooled by Hambini on YouTube. They arrived in 8 days to NYC. Thank you Hambini for promptly responding to my query. I wanted to install these myself but couldn’t quite justify buying the tools so I had my LBS do it under my supervision and they did a great job for a reasonable price. I also had them install Smalley circlips to replace the stock (seal impinging) eyeleted rings. The difference was noticeable and significant. The drive train felt glassy smooth under load and I set two PRS in a dead calm without even pushing my HR into the red on my daily 20 mile Central Park ride. This upgrade is just an incredible bang for the buck. I am shocked at how many watts were being stolen by my shit stock bearings. Thank you Hambini!

    Replaced the Enduro ceramics in a Specialized OSBB that had gone a bit crunchy. The NTN’s are next level in their look and feel. I know the spin test is a bit of a gimmick, but 31 turns! What??

    Just a note for US buyers: the shipping is slightly more but since the 20% VAT does not apply you end up paying less than your UK cousins.

Do these bearings get additional outer seals once fitted and if yes which are recommended? I recently took my crankset out because the bearings are pitted and one bearing was ripped into two pieces (outer and inner race, balls everywhere, shite FSA bearing). That was the first time I took it apart myself and noticed that the BB consists of 1 wave washer and 2 outer bearing seals and the 2 bearings. Am I supposed to reuse the seals and wave washer? One seal got destroyed as well, so what should i go for now? (I suspect not FSA?) (my bike: Cannondale SuperSix 2010 BB30 with FSA SL-K light crankset) Also does someone know how the side to side play on this crank can be adjusted? I had the feeling that the crank was putting to much force on the sides of the bearing but as there is only the wave washer in there I don't know how i could adjust that play (or lack of it) Would appreciate if someone could help me out! These bearings come with integrated seals, I think the seals you are referring to actually double up as spacers. You are supposed to reuse the wave washer and the outer seals (spacers). The side to side play is adjusted by way of shimming. Getting the preload correct can be problematic with wave washer systems.

The wave washer is there to take out the movement/play tot the sides of the crank. You must reuse the wave washer.
The 2 outer bearing seals are extra seals to prevent debris from reaching the bearings and their seals. They also diminisch or prevent water ingress into the bearings from rain or washing (especiallypressure washing your bike. The 2 outer seals do not prevent water ingres but diminish it..
